Pytania bezpośrednie i pośrednie

W pytaniach bezpośrednich (direct questions) czasownik znajduje się albo na początku zdania, albo bezpośrednio po zaimku pytającym.

Are you busy?
Can you buy some milk?
What are you going to do?

Pytania pośrednie (indirect questions) poprzedza się w zwrotami takimi jak: Have you got any idea..., Do you know..., Can you tell me... itd. Szyk w tych pytaniach jest inny niż w typowych. W pytaniach pośrednich nie używa się operatora do.

Have you got any idea where I am?
Do you know what she told her?
Have you got any idea where I can get it?
Can you tell me who she is?


Na tego typu pytania można odpowiedzieć w następujący sposób:

I've no idea where you are.
I don't know what she told her.
I don't have any idea where you can get it.
I can't tell you who she is.


Jeżeli chcesz zadać pytanie, na które odpowiada się tak lub nie, powinieneś użyć if lub whether.

Do you know whether your relationship is built on solid foundations?
Do you know if there will be a party at our school?
